Clogging is an American folk dance from the Southern Appalachian Mountains, with ties to step dances from the British Isles, traditional dance of the Native Americans, and solo dances of African Americans. It was introduced to Australia in the 1980’s and there are dance clubs around the country. Clogging shoes have double-taps which are used to create rhythms, and the heel of your clogging shoe is the timekeeper. But you don’t need clogging shoes to start dancing, leather-soled shoes with a low heel are ideal for beginners. Clogging is cued, like square dancing or aerobics, and dancers learn steps, not routines. Cloggers dance to a variety of music including country, Irish and pop.
